Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is first attested documentary in khrysoboulion (golden bull) dated 20 September 1459 by Vlad the Impaler also known by the nickname Dracula. The legends place the establishment of Bucharest in the 13th century by a shepherd called Bucur. Negru Voda (13th century) is also recorded as founder of Bucharest in the writings of Luccari of Raguza who traveled through Romanian Land in the 15th century. After the Unification of the Principalities in 1859 Bucharest became the most important city in South Eastern Europe after Constantinople. In 1861, Bucharest was illuminated by gas lamps, before Paris or Berlin. The current layout of the city dates from the end of 19th century. The boulevards which are now named Magheru - Balcescu - Bratianu and Regina Elisabeta - Carol I form the great north- south and east-west axes. The emblem buildings have been build: Romanian Atheneum, the Deposits and Loans Bank (CEC), the Post Office Palace (now the National Museum of History), the Tribunal, the University, the Palace of Patriarchate. The twentieth century completes the portrait of the city. Bucharest became known as “Little Paris”, in recognition of its glittering social, cultural and economic life. Discover the mysteries of Bucharest right now. Our tour of the city centre covers a wide variety of objectives so that you can emerge yourself in the complicated history of this city. From the time of Vlad Dracula the Impeller to the “genius of the Carpathians” Nicolae Ceausescu our tour covers every important monument and location where the history of the city and that of Romania was changed forever. Our tour starts at the Meeting Point (Hotel Golden Tulip Victoria), a central place in the city and we move along from here on Calea Victoriei, a traditional route which leads in to the Old City and gave Bucharest the nickname “The small Paris”. We will visit the Palace Square, home of the former Royal Palace and the communist built Palace Hall. The Romanian Athenee, a most important place of culture and art, and the Athenee Hotel are also located here and you can admire their unique architecture and be amazed by the history that they represent. In the Old City we are going to see centuries-old churches filled with tales of the times and you can stop for beverage at Manuc’s Inn, a famous establishment for its food and drinks. The journey continues to University Square, one of the most important places in the recent history of Romania, a symbol of freedom and repression at the same time. Also here you can admire the most impressive architecture in Bucharest, old buildings and communist era buildings merged together as nowhere else in Europe forming an unique image. We will enjoy the shadow of the mighty trees in Cismigiu Park, the oldest park in Bucharest and finally we will end our tour in the same Meeting Point in Hotel Golden Tulip Victoria, Calea Victoriei 166.
